Looking to lose your L-plates? Learning to drive is an exciting period of life with the freedom of traveling on the road at your own will is finally in sight.

Learner driver insurance gives you the option to get covered while you’re getting familiar with driving. You may want to learn with a family member or friend while in their vehicle and this type of insurance allows you to do exactly that, giving you a more flexible way to learn how to drive.

What is learner driver insurance?

A specialist insurance policy designed for people learning to drive, cover is typically offered from 2 hours to 5 months. It allows holders of a government-issued provisional driving license to drive on the road legally. The insurance is only valid if you’re accompanied by a full license holder who is over the age of 25. You’ll only need this type of insurance if you plan to drive any car that’s not with a paid professional driving instructor.

How do I get a provisional license?

While you must be 17 to learn how to drive, you can apply for a provisional license if you are at least 15 years and 9 months old. It costs £34 to apply online or £43 by post. Your license will take 1 week to come if you apply online or 3 weeks if you apply by the post.

To get a provisional license, you can apply on the Government’s website.

Who can supervise a learner driver?

For the cover to be valid, you must be supervised. The supervisor must be between the age of 25 and 75 and have held a valid driving license for at least three years.

What are the benefits of learner driver insurance?

One of the biggest upsides of learner driver is the fact that it gives you much more flexibility while you’re getting to grips with driving. You’re not restricted to an instructor’s schedule and lessons, you could choose to practice whenever provided the person who will be supervising you and their vehicle is free.

You can choose how long you would like the policy for, so you’re only paying for the time you need it, whether than be a couple of hours or a few months.

The cover is fully comprehensive and separate to the vehicle owner’s standard policy. This means their NCD is not affected.
