Your guide to Motor Legal Protection

Motor Legal Protection is a phrase you’ll often see when getting a car insurance policy. But, what does it mean, how does it work and why might you need it?

What is Motor Legal Protection?

Basically, Motor Legal Protection or MLP for short, offers you cover for any legal costs involved in pursuing a claim on your insurance. So, if you need to take somebody else to court over an accident or they take you, your insurance provider could cover all or some of the legal costs involved in this process. It’s also sometimes referred to as Uninsured Loss Recovery.

How do you make a claim?

If you wanted to make a Motor Legal Protection claim, you would need to get in contact with your insurance provider. They will pass you onto their motor legal claims department to investigate the claim and guide you through the process. Your case will be passed onto a lawyer to follow through with the claim, though legal teams will only take your case if they think you have a good chance of winning.

Why might you need Motor Legal Protection?

Motor Legal Protection is designed to give individuals peace of mind if the worse were to happen, so that you don’t have to worry about being out of pocket if you need to go to court over a claim. However, it is not always included as standard on your insurance policy.

Instead, it is often offered as an additional add-on with your insurance policy. If this is the case, you will have to purchase the add-on, which will vary in price between insurance providers. Whether you decide to include Motor Legal Protection is up to you.
