In the UK the average family wastes almost £500 per year on foods that are not used, discarded and thrown in the bin. The most common foods that are thrown away are bakery items, fresh fruit and vegetables and drinks. But did you know that a majority of these items can be frozen? In today’s blog I will explain how each of these items can be frozen when brought or before their sell by dates instead of binned to save you money!
Food 1: Bakery Items
If you are a regular waster of bread then why not either buy a smaller loaf or freeze half of it as soon as you purchase it? Alternatively, why not whizz stale or unwanted bakery items up in the food processer to make breadcrumbs for the top of your lasagne, homemade breaded fish or Christmas bread sauce.
Food 2: Fresh Fruit
Instead of throwing away brown bananas or bruised apples why not chop them up and freeze them for another time. Use the apples to make a pie or crumble and the old bananas can be used to make banana bread. Alternatively, I freeze all of my leftover fruit to then whizz up in the smoothie maker.
Food 3: Fresh Vegetables
Again, as like freezing fresh fruit, you can also freeze certain vegetables. In much the same style, all leftover vegetables can be thrown into a lunchbox in the freezer and when the mood takes you, you can make homemade soups or pasta sauces.
Food 4: Drinks
From left over fruit juices to white wine, a majority of drinks can be frozen. Freeze leftover white wine in ice cube trays and use at a later date in risottos or sauces. Similarly, freeze fresh fruit juice and add to a smoothie at a later date.
Please always check the dates on your food and drink before you freeze them and only freeze foods that are within their ‘sell by’ and ‘use by’ dates.
