Make a list
Making a list and planning your meals out is one of the most effective ways you can cut the price of your food bill and in turn reduce the amount of waste that you throw away. Start by taking stock of what foods you already have in your cupboard, fridge and freezer and see if you can make meals using these found foods. Then make a list, based on the foods that you don’t have so that you don’t shop for items that you just don’t need.
There really is so much competition between supermarkets nowadays meaning that the prices are competitive and the quality is good regardless of brand, so don’t think that a luxury brand is necessarily better than a supermarkets own-brand.
Don’t shop hungry
Going shopping when you’re hungry is the biggest behavioural mistake that you can make. If you go food shopping hungry, then you are most probably going to spend more money as you have food on the mind.
The more people you take shopping, the more temptations and tastes will make their way into your shopping trolley. It is always best to either ‘go it alone’ or if you can’t then go with a strict list and a ‘no extras’ rule.
Bulk buying is not always best
Bulk buying doesn’t always equal savings. If you don’t need, or regularly use what’s on offer, then what is the point in buying it? Only buy foods you know you will use, otherwise the bulk buy deal isn’t such a good deal after all, but is in fact a waste of money.
