Cooking for yourself: a university survival guide

For some people, the thought of leaving home and actually having to cook for yourself can be very daunting!

Luckily, here at Budget Insurance we’ve created a handy survival guide to take away the stress of dinner time, and provide useful and practical tips about cooking at uni.

Firstly, you don’t need to cook every night

By this we don’t mean you should substitute cooking for takeaways and eating out, what we mean is, share the load. At university it’s likely that you’ll be sharing a kitchen with a group of other students, all of whom also probably don’t want to have to cook every single evening too. So take it in turns. This way you’ll be able to try lots of different dishes that you might not usually cook for yourself.

When you do cook, cook in bulk

Whenever you’re cooking, cook a large batch so you can freeze leftover portions for future meals. These pre-prepared meals are a life-saver when you’ve got limited spare time one evening. It’s also usually cheaper to bulk buy produce, so this is a great way to cut down on your food costs and freezing the extra portions also means you reduce your food waste.

Be supermarket savvy

Later in the evening, or on a Sunday afternoon (just before the shops close) can be the best time to find some great discounts, particularly on fresh produce. Use the flexibility that comes with a student routine to shop at different times, and discover when the discount labels start appearing. Some supermarkets also offer targeted student offers or discounts, which can help your weekly food budget stretch that little bit further.

Learn to be creative

Pasta is often the default ‘easy to make’ student meal. However after a week on the trot of pasta and sauce it can start to get really boring! But it doesn’t have to be. Experiment with the things you have in the cupboard, mix things up and add in the odd alternative ingredient.  Substitute the traditional combinations for alternative meat or veg to add some variety to your basic meals.

And If in doubt, Google it.

You don’t need to have a library of cookery books these days, luckily the internet is full of easy to follow recipes.  Often you can start typing the name of a few of the ingredients you have to hand and it’ll provide you with a list of multiple combinations you can use to create a tasty meal. Handy if you need a bit of inspiration!

As well as this, there are ‘how-to-guides for nearly everything cooking related online too, so if it doubt Google it, and follow the step by step instructions.
