People looking for home contents insurance protection have been urged to consider moving their search online to take advantage of cheaper deals.
A new study from financial website MoneyExpert has found that 78 of the 212 home contents policies that are currently available to homeowners can be purchased over the internet.
Of this figure, 38 apparently offer discounts for people who buy their home contents insurance online as opposed to over the phone or at a high street branch.
And a comparison of the sector has enabled the organisation to estimate the average internet discount on offer to home insurance customers.
While the average reduction available to people who purchase home contents insurance online is 13.7 per cent, this can rise to 35 per cent dependent upon the home insurance provider involved.
Sean Gardner, chief executive of MoneyExpert, said that the study underlined the benefits of looking online to find a cheap home insurance quote.
"Insurers can afford to offer discounts to customers buying online because processing an online transaction costs them less," he said.
"With average discounts of 13.7 per cent, it makes sense for consumers to take advantage."
However, Mr Gardner added that the quest to find a cheap home insurance quote should not prompt customers to sacrifice the level of cover provided by the policy.
Although it is possible to purchase home contents insurance independently of building insurance, many home insurance companies offer discounts for people who take out both at the same time.
By purchasing a comprehensive home building and contents insurance package, therefore, the homeowner may be able to find a particularly cheap home insurance quote.
