Home insurance policy holders in Oxford may want to ensure they keep their properties secure to avoid the risk of having to make a claim in the event of an unforced burglary.
According to the Oxford Mail, five burglaries recently took place in the Kidlington and Bicester areas in just one night.
In each incident, the householders had failed to makes sure that the doors to their property were completely secure and lost personal items such as bank cards, mobile phones, cameras and cash during the burglaries.
The uPVC doors had been secured by engaging the locks to make sure that no-one could open them from the outside, but the householders had failed to complete the process by locking the doors with a key.
"I would appeal to people, especially people with this type of door on their homes, to ensure they go to bed each night knowing the door is properly locked," stated Detective Constable Keith Hutchinson of the Cherwell priority crime team.
The detective went on to appeal to consumers to keep valuables such as wallets, handbags and mobile phones out of sight in the hallway, where they may be easily spotted by criminals.
He advised consumers - which may include home insurance holders - to place such items in a secure place where they cannot be seen, such as behind a chair.
Residents of Surrey were recently treated to a free theatre trip to see a production about how they could avoid falling victim to distraction burglaries.
