UK consumers are being urged to make sure their home insurance policies cover damage caused by severe weather like storms.
According to research firm Defaqto, as incidents of extreme weather increase across Britain, householders need to be aware of exclusions within some home insurance policies.
The firm states that in general, most home insurance policies cover damage caused by flooding and storms, but consumers may want to check that items left out in the open are covered too.
Meanwhile, the rising number of flooding incidences over the year has started to increase awareness among Britons that investing in forms of alternative accommodation may be wise, the firm states.
All policies will offer some sort of cover for those who need to live somewhere else while their own property is fixed, it adds.
It is also worth checking whether a policy will cover the cost of removing bulky equipment which has been damaged, such as children's trampolines.
Meanwhile, claims for extreme weather such as lightning could result in total loss, so householders should ensure they have the correct level of insurance, Defaqto urges, with senior researcher Mel Gray stating: "It's essential that people check that the sums insured under their buildings and contents policies are adequate to cover such a catastrophic event."
People based in areas such as Luton and Farnborough may have had to rely on home insurance recently in the wake of a series of tornados that struck the region towards the end of September.
