Motorists warned: '4x4s most likely to be stolen'
02 March 2010
Car insurance policyholders who drive 4x4s might want to take extra care in keeping their vehicles secure as the autos have been found to be the most at risk of theft.
Research by vehicle information provider HPI has highlighted that 4x4s and compact executive-style vehicles are top of the list when it comes to theft.
The company is calling upon dealers to conduct checks to make sure the vehicles they are planning to sell on were not stolen.
Daniel Burgess, director of automotive for HPI, said the two types of vehicle account for a quarter of all those found to be stolen.
"Roadsters and small family cars follow close behind, both at eight per cent, suggesting it's not just the prestige fast cars, but the everyday smaller vehicles that are bringing criminals financial gain," he added.
Mr Burgess went on to suggest the age of a vehicle also has some bearing on its risk of being stolen, with criminals tending to target autos aged between four and eight years old.
"These cars account for a whopping total of 45 per cent of all stolen cars, probably because they can be sold on relatively easily and usually for cash, making it even easier for criminals to make a quick buck," he said.
Meanwhile, the firm recently reported that drivers should beware of clockers, who adjust the mileage on vehicles they are selling to raise the asking price for car and
van insurance policyholders looking for a used model.
