Drivers warned not to get complacent about vehicle security

Car and
van insurance policyholders who have fitted their vehicles with alarm systems might not want to get complacent about the security of their auto.
Recent findings by Endsleigh have shown that the top three most dangerous places for theft are Hull, Nottingham and Bradford, while the safest places were named as Swindon, Cheltenham and Solihull.
In light of the findings, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is calling upon drivers to be on their guard despite advances in technology in terms of alarms and video surveillance.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, urged motorists to follow some well-known tips, such as parking in busy and well-lit areas, do not leave valuables on display in the vehicle and make sure the auto is fitted with an alarm and immobiliser.
And it is worth making sure the car keys are well protected in the home, too, for those looking to avoid both car and home insurance claims.
"Never underestimate the determination of some thieves: don't leave your car keys in a bowl or on a rack by the door - one of the most common methods of stealing a car is using a pole to reach through the letterbox to get the keys," Mr Rodger added.
The IAM also advises Britons not to leave the keys in the ignition when filling up their car with petrol or warming it up, bearing in mind their insurance policy could be invalidated by leaving the auto unlocked and unattended.
Female drivers in Lancashire were recently urged to be on their guard after a thief tried to steal three vehicles.
