Speeders caught 'because road layout does not match limits'

A senior police official in Cambridge has admitted that the road layouts in the city make higher speeds seem more appropriate than the actual limits laid down.

In an interview with the Cambridge News, an officer said that drivers are being found out for speeding because the limit does not match the layout of the road in some cases.

Commenting on the interview, spokesman for the Association of British Drivers (ABD) and former traffic police officer Keith Peat said that the 50,000 motorists who receive speeding fines in the city every year suggests that the limits are too low.

Mr Peat suggested officers are wrong to establish speed cameras to trap people at these locations if they are aware of the problems.

"The speed limits should be raised in line with the '85th Percentile' rule or the signage improved," he added.

Having been aware of the unintentional speeding inviting layouts can cause for some time, the ABD has created a database to register the location in case motorists are prosecuted.

"Now that we have an admission of this 'entrapment' effect by a senior traffic officer, we are ready to trial it with the general public," the ABD commented.

Car and van insurance policyholders could benefit from greater signage of speed limits in such areas.

According to government figures, without safety cameras, around 100 more people would lose their lives to speeding every year, in addition to hundreds more potential accidents and car insurance claims.
