Home insurance firm advises against water damage

15 February 2010
Home insurance policyholders might want to take extra care of their property during the recurring cold weather to avoid damage to their properties.

According to home insurance quote provider Direct Line, claims for burst pipes and other water damage have risen by a third since the freezing fortnight at the start of the year.

And the firm has said it is concerned that much higher costs will ensue as householders look to replace belongings damaged during the thaw and re-freeze that has followed.

To help avoid loss and damage, the company advises householders to take action to stop leaks as soon as they are spotted.

Direct Line's Andrew Lowe commented: "While claims from water damage are covered under most home insurance policies, precious belongings can't always be replaced and the time and intrusion required to complete proper repairs can be a hassle, so it's a situation that most people would rather avoid."

If a leak occurs, homeowners are urged to shut off the water supply and phone their insurer.

To avoid burst pipes, the firm suggests consumers make sure their pipes are well-insulated and keep the heating on at a low level all the time. It is also advisable to keep important documents in a waterproof container and keep a note of high value possessions.

If pipes do burst, householders should run the taps to empty the water system after making sure the supply has been turned off. They should also take photographs of the damage and call out a plumber and electrician to check the utilities.

Last year, the firm urged consumers to make sure they know where their water valves are and learn how to shut them off, as well as making sure loft insulation is in good condition.
