15 February 2010
Women's car insurance policyholders in Lancashire might want to be on their guard as police have revealed females are the target of a car thief in the area.
ThisisLancashire.co.uk reports that three women drivers have been targeted by a white male aged between late 20s and mid-30s.
The offender struck three times in Pilsworth, Whitefield and Prestwich, climbing into the passenger seat of each woman's vehicle and threatening the motorist, potentially also causing
car insurance claims.
As a result of the incidents, the criminals has made off with a Mercedes-Benz and a Volkswagen Golf, but was unsuccessful in taking a BMW during the third incident, from which he fled the scene.
The females attacked were all aged between 30 and 38 and have described the man as being between five feet six inches and five feet 11 inches tall, of medium to average build.
Detective Inspector John Mazzolai stated that the similarities present in the incidents suggest they are connected.
"We have a number of officers working to identify this man, but if anyone has information that can help us I would ask them to get in touch," he said.
"I would also urge women to be mindful of this man until he is caught and be aware of your surroundings when getting in or out of your car."
Government figures show that vehicle-related theft has fallen by more than 50 per cent since 1997, with the cars most likely to be stolen being those over nine years old, accounting for two-thirds of thefts.
