'Drivers should consider winter tyres during cold snaps'

12 February 2010
The UK may need to alter its driving habits if it is to make it through freezing winters such as the one experienced in recent weeks.

Car storage, servicing and race training Nurburgmotorsport, based at the German racing track, has highlighted how other countries cope in such circumstances.

In Germany, drivers check the level of anti-freeze, put extra fluid in the washer windscreen bottle and change from summer tyres to winter ones in a bid to make it through the winter and potentially avoid car insurance claims.

"I do not understand all this trouble we see reported in the UK every winter," commented Manfred Scheer, race team manager of British-owned company Nurburgmotorsport.

"We know each winter the temperature gets colder with rain and snow," he said.

Switching to winter tyres may help drivers avoid car and van insurance claims as they are designed to perform better in snowy conditions, providing enhanced levels of grip and enhanced road-holding ability.

Mr Scheer went on to say that using the special wheels means that nice aluminium tyres are not damaged by salted roads.

"It's much better to do this than having a road accident or being in a long traffic queue because of no grip," the expert suggested.

According to wheel retailer Avon Tyres, winter tyres not only help in snowy conditions but also in any kind of poor weather, such as mud, slush and ice.
