'50% of motorists drive the morning after booze-up'
25 January 2010
More than half of motorists could find themselves at risk of more than a
car insurance claim by driving while over the legal blood alcohol limit.
A study by What Car? has highlighted over 50 per cent of motorists have taken to the wheel the morning after a big booze-up, despite realising they are still over the limit.
Of those questioned, 37 per cent of motorists said they had done this once or twice, while ten per cent said it happened from time to time.
Some six per cent of motorists confessed to drink driving on a regular basis.
"It's incredible to think that in this day and age people continue to drink-drive the morning after," commented What Car? editor Steve Fowler.
"They are putting their lives and the lives of many others at risk," he warned.
Mr Fowler went on to say that motorists who think they are over the limit the following morning probably are and as such should stay away from their vehicles.
The Association of Chief Police Officers commented that drink and drug driving can impair a motorist's ability to judge distance and speed, as well as reducing concentration levels and delaying reaction times.
In other findings published recently, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents discovered the number of drink drivers detected over the festive period fell by more than 16 per cent to 7,638 over a month-long police crackdown on the crime.
