Mercedes-Benz commended for luxury and safety
19 January 2010
Luxury vehicle maker Mercedes-Benz has shown its prowess in the safety sector, potentially enhancing its appeal to
car insurance policyholders who place safety as a top priority.
The firm has scooped two accolades at the recent What Car? Car of the Awards in London, taking the safety title for its drowsiness detection system Attention Assist and the Best Luxury Car win for its S Class.
Steve Fowler, Group Editor at What Car? commented the S Class is well-built using the best materials, with a smooth yet punchy engine and an agile stance.
Meanwhile, he added that the Attention Assist system is a useful and clever gadget, with Mercedes-Benz planning to introduce the feature as standard on all its models.
"The consequences of falling asleep at the wheel just don't bear thinking about," Mr Fowler stated.
Attention Assist works by using sensors to monitor driver behaviour. The information gathered allows the car to create a driver profile that is compared with the behaviour sensed during every trip to identify whether the motorist is becoming drowsy.
Among the areas assessed is steering behaviour, vehicle speed, journey time and time of day. If the system detects that the driver is becoming tired, it emits an audible warning and a message flashes up on the display to help drivers potentially avoid car or
van insurance claims.
The awards ceremony saw Peugeot's 3008 crossover vehicle named Car of the Year.
