Car insurance expert issues winter driving guidelines
11 January 2010
Drivers across the UK are being urged to take a number of precautions before venturing out onto the roads in the treacherous conditions.
A
car insurance expert is urging drivers to prepare themselves and their vehicles for the outdoors by investing in vital products such as breakdown cover.
Steve Sweeney of comparison site moneysupermarket.com commented that drivers for whom travelling is essential should make sure they have protection against being stranded in the cold and also equip their vehicle with essential items such as torches, jump leads and a high visibility jacket.
To help avoid a breakdown, Mr Sweeney advised motorists to regularly check their vehicles over, paying particular attention to oil and anti-freeze levels and ensuring tyre tread is at the legal standard.
He went on to suggest that Britons are "extra vigilant and prepared for the potential actions of less responsible road users" and take care not to leave their vehicles open to thieves when de-icing the car.
"In cold or icy conditions, I advise motorists not to leave their vehicles unattended whilst warming up their engine and it's important to drive carefully and take care not to accelerate, brake or take sharp corners suddenly," the car and
van insurance expert added.
The Association of British Insurers recently urged drivers not to leave their vehicles unattended with the key in the ignition to warm up following spates of such incidents across the country resulting in thefts.
