Range Rover named Car of the Decade
07 January 2010
Car insurance policyholders may have been among the thousands of Autocar readers to have voted the Range Rover Car of the Decade.
The publication compiled a list of the top ten vehicles of the last ten years as voted for by the public.
Taking almost a fifth of the total vote, the Range Rover scooped the top spot.
The MkII Lotus Elise came in second, marking the manufacturer's second award in a matter of weeks. The Evora model was recently named Top Gear's Sports Car of the Year 2009.
Autocar's editor Chas Hallett commented: "Both Land Rover and Lotus deserve a pat on the back for producing such iconic vehicles that still appeal through the passage of time. It's a great achievement."
The Range Rover may appeal to car and
van insurance policyholders with its multi-terrain use combined with a luxurious interior package.
Hilton Holloway, Autocar's associate editor, suggested that the vehicle has a presence that can be felt among the admiring majority.
"The Range Rover defined a new type of luxury at launch, technically sophisticated, beautifully detailed, modern and yet retrospective," the vehicle expert added.
Nissan's GT-R and the Bugatti Veyron shared third place honours, while other models to make the list included the Jaguar XF, Ford Focus and Vauxhall VX220.
Last year, Land Rover announced it plans to build a smaller production vehicle of its LRX concept car to join the Range Rover line-up in 2011, marking the firm's lightest model.
