Government warns drivers to kill their speed
07 January 2010
A campaign has been launched by the government to crack down on the number of motorists potentially risking more than a
car insurance claim by driving too fast.
Ministers have re-launched the Kill your speed, or live with it initiative, that had its first run in February last year.
Costing £1.4 million, the campaign will use television, radio and cinema advertising to get its message across.
The key theme of the adverts is that drivers who cause a fatality will have to deal with their crime for the rest of their lives, being tormented by the incident. The radio adverts feature children's voices to chill motorists who speed.
Launching the campaign, road safety minister Paul Clark commented that speeding resulted in 600 lives lost during 2008.
"This campaign highlights the consequences of speeding for the driver involved: what is life like for the driver who kills because they are in a rush to get home and how does that split second decision affect the rest of their life?," he stated.
Mr Clark added he hopes the campaign will get drivers to stop speeding before it is too late.
Government findings have highlighted that speed cameras may be helping save lives every year. Car and
van insurance policyholders who slow down at the sight of a camera may be helping protect their safety and the wellbeing of other.
In some areas, speed cameras have helped reduce fatalities by more than 100, figures show.
