ABI issues advice to flood-hit householders
27 November 2009
Following the extreme flooding of recent weeks in areas of Cumbria and Scotland,
home insurance policyholders have been given advice from the Association of British Insurers regarding their action plans.
As the areas dry up and clean-up operations get underway, the organisation is calling upon Britons to get in touch with their cover providers to make a claim, with many flood-hit areas having set up 24-hour emergency helplines.
The ABI recommends that consumers and businesses keep as many of their flood-damaged possessions as possible and inform insurance providers if properties are unliveable.
It goes on to warn householders that the drying out process can take many months, suggesting that doors, windows and cupboards should be left open when practical.
Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, commented that it is imperative work does not begin too early on damp properties as this may result in problems later on.
"The good news is that insurers are on hand to react quickly and start the drying out and restoration process as soon as possible and to help customers cope with life while their homes are drying out and being repaired by providing advice, support and alternative accommodation where needed," he added.
According to the organisation, the estimate for claims made by those in Cumbria and Scotland in light of the floods is £100 million, but the figure could rise as more complex claims surface.
In related news, drivers have recently been warned not to leave their vehicles in areas at risk of flooding to help protect their
car insurance premiums.
