Car costs 'behind couple conflicts'
20 November 2009
Women's car insurance customers planning a new vehicle purchase may be interested to hear research suggests price is the factor most likely to spark a row between couples when choosing a new motor.
Conducted by used car retailer Carsite.co.uk, the study revealed money to be the main bone of contention for more than one-quarter (26 per cent) when choosing which car to buy.
The second most thorny issue was style, with 23 per cent admitting they argued over how their new ride should look.
In a similar vein, colour was the catalyst for almost one in five (19 per cent) disputes.
Commenting on the results of the poll, Alistair Jeff, spokesperson for the retailer, said: "We're not officially out of the recession yet, so naturally big purchases are going to be more closely scrutinised.
"Many household budgets are still tight and when it comes to buying a car, it's one of the biggest investments a couple can make together."
The least likely reason to cause an argument was fuel economy, which was behind just one in 30 disagreements.
Mr Jeff suggested this could be a result of the fluctuating fuel costs of the last 12 months, with couples becoming more united in wanting to get better mileage out of their new car.
In related news, second-hand car dealer Carcraft has suggested vehicle purchases could be influenced by the buyer's star sign.
According to research conducted by the firm, Aquarians prefer quirky Minis and Ford Kas, while adventurous Sagittarians pine for 4x4s.
