Can somebody else drive my car for a short period?
Your car insurance policy only covers the persons that are listed in section 5 of your Certificate of Motor Insurance. If anyone else drives, including members of your family or someone living with you, the car will not be covered
If you want to let somebody else drive for a short period, call us and we will add them on as a Temporary Driver, providing that they meet the underwriting criteria of the insurer
The maximum time that a Temporary Driver may be added to a car insurance policy for is 14 days. At the end of 14 days the same driver may be re-added however, after the third occasion the Temporary Driver should be added as a named driver
The Temporary Driver may specify a different use for the vehicle to that of the Regular Driver, (depending upon the underwriting criteria of the insurer). For example, the Regular Driver may use the car for Private & Commuting use but the Temporary Driver could specify Business Use (in relation with the Regular Driver's business)
Temporary Drivers are underwritten in the same way as named drivers, and our computer system will calculate the premium accordingly. The minimum premium to add Temporary Driver is currently £15.00
The premium due for a Temporary Driver is not lodged for until the day the driver comes on cover.
The fee is charged each time a Temporary Driver is put on cover, even when it is the same Temporary Driver, or the cover for one Temporary Driver is extended.
