Am I insured to drive other cars with the permission of the owner?
This usually only applies to the Regular Driver on a car insurance policy and only if they are aged 25 or older. This cover is included automatically where applicable and is not available as an optional extra.
Please check section 5 of the Certificate of Motor Insurance to make sure that this extension of cover applies. If the information about the Extension is not printed, then it does NOT apply.
This cover only applies if the Regular Driver has permission to drive the other car from the car's owner.
Note that the limitations as to use detailed in section 6 of the Certificate of Motor Insurance apply. Cover only applies when the Regular Driver is driving another car within the use limitations of his own car insurance policy. For example, a Regular Driver with Private and Commuting use will not have liability cover to drive other cars for Business purposes.
Liability cover does not include damage to the car that the Regular Driver is driving at the time, as the extension excludes damage to property placed in the care or custody of the driver. This includes the transportation of items belonging to a Third Party. This applies regardless of the cover the Regular Driver has on their car insurance policy as they may only drive other cars on a Third Party basis.
Our car insurance policies exclude cover under this extension for liability arising from the Regular Driver using any other car, which is owned by him, or hired to him under a lease agreement.
The extension applies even when the Regular Driver only has Third Party Only car insurance cover with us.This is not the case with all policies.
This cover will not apply if the Regular Driver no longer has their car or if it has been damaged beyond economical repair. If an incident occurs and the car is written off or stolen they will not be entitled to a third party extension until the insured car has been replaced.
