Sensitive Data

This notice explains the purposes for which we will use the personal data which we hold. This should be shown to anyone insured to drive the vehicle covered under a car insurance policy.

Claims & Underwriting Exchange Register

Insurers pass information to the Claims and Underwriting Exchange Register run by Insurance Database Services Limited (IDS Ltd) and the Motor Insurance's Anti Fraud and Theft Register, run by the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The aim is to help us check information provided and also to prevent fraudulent claims. When we deal with your request for car insurance, we may search these registers. Under the conditions of your car insurance policy, you must tell us about any incident (such as an accident or theft) which may or may not give rise to a claim. When you tell us about an incident, we will pass the information relating to it, to the Registers. You can ask us for more information about this.

Motor Insurance Database

Your car insurance policy details will be added to the Motor Insurance Database (MID), run by the Motor Insurers' Information Centre (MIIC). MID data may be used by the DVLA and DVLNI for the purpose of Electronic Vehicle Licensing and by the Police for the purposes of establishing whether a driver's use of the vehicle is likely to be covered by a motor insurance policy and/or for preventing and detecting crime. If you are involved in an accident (in the UK or abroad) other UK insurers, the Motor Insurers' Bureau and MIIC may search the MID to get relevant car insurance policy information.

Persons pursuing a claim in respect of a road traffic accident (including citizens of other countries) can also get relevant information which is held on the MID.

You can find out more about this from us, or at www.miic.org.uk.

Insurance Administration

Information you supply may be used for the purpose of insurance administration and renewal by the insurer, its agents, reinsurers and your intermediary. In assessing any claims made, insurers may undertake checks against publicly available information such as, Electoral Register, County Court Judgements, bankruptcy or repossession information. Information may also be shared with other insurers either directly or via those acting for the insurer such as Loss Adjusters or Investigators.

Marketing

BGL Group Limited and its agents may use your information to keep you informed by post, telephone, email or other means of products and services which they feel may be of interest to you. Your information may also be used for the above purposes after your car insurance policy has lapsed. If you do not wish your information to be used for marketing purposes please write to the Data Protection Officer at the address in the Contact Information section.

Credit Searches

In assessing your Application/Renewal, we may search files made available to us by Credit Reference Agencies. They may keep a record of that search. We may also pass to Credit Reference Agencies information we hold about you and your payment record with us. Credit Reference Agencies share information with other organisations, enabling applications for financial products to be assessed or to assist the tracing of debtors, or to prevent fraud. We may ask Credit Reference Agencies to provide a credit scoring computation. Credit scoring use a number of factors to work out risks involved in any application. A score is given to each factor and a total score obtained. Where we use automatic credit scoring, acceptance or rejection of your application will not depend only on the results of the credit scoring process.

Sensitive Data

In order to assess the terms of the car insurance contract or administer claims, we will need to collect personal data which the Data Protection Act 1998 defines as sensitive, such as medical history or criminal convictions. By proceeding with this contract you will signify your explicit consent to such information being processed by the insurer or its agents.

For the purpose of the Data Protection Act 1998 the Data Controller in relation to the personal data you supply is BISL Limited.

Following payment of a fee you are entitled to request a copy of information we hold about you. If you have any questions or you would like to find out more about this notice please write to the Data Protection Officer, BGL Group Ltd, Pegasus House, Bakewell Road, Orton Southgate, Peterborough PE2 6YS.
